Citrine is a member of the quartz family varying in color from light, clear yellow through to a deeper amber tone due to the presence of aluminum. Its name comes from the Latin “citrus,” which means “citron,” a tree with lemonlike fruit. In general, the darker, orange shades of citrine are actually heat-treated amethyst, though it tends to carry the same metaphysical properties as natural citrine. Darker shades of citrine that are not heat-treated by human hands are actually heated within the earth through a process called irradiation, or the natural warming of the earth to higher temperatures in some regions. In Congo, for example, the earth is warmer than in Brazil, and as a result, the citrine from Africa naturally tends to be a deeper color.
